形態特徵

Evergreen tree, usually 4-25 m high, with trunk to 5 m. in diam, the bark dark brown to black; banchlets stout; terminal buds with papyraceous scales.
Leaves coriaceous, broadly ovate to lanceolate-elliptic or rarely elliptic, deep green, glossy, 5-10.5 cm long, 3-8 cm broad, rounded or broad obtuse at base, acuminate to cuspidate at apex, slighly thicker and undulate at margin, entire at the lower part, serrulate distally, pinnate-nerved; petiole 3-8 cm long.
Inflorescece 6-10 cm long, 14- to 23-flowered, bract thin-papyraceous, linear, 1-2 cm long; pedicels 1-3 cm long, in fruit much longer; stamnes 40-75, spreading at first in protandrous tree and downard in protogynous tree, filaments erect when shedding pollen; carpels (5-)7-11, with 16-30 ovules.
Follicetum 6-10 mm wide, with persistent dry stigma;seeds 5-12 per follicle, linear ellipsoid, 3-4 mm long.

物候

Flowering betwen the late March and mid-May; fruits mature in late August.

分布

台灣 : it is moderate common in the in the forests of central mountain ranges at the latitudes between 2,000 and 3,000 m, and in the northern part at 500 to 1,050 m, sometimes in pure stands.
